Stop debt vultures swooping in on countries in crisis

This is the worst global debt crisis in 35 years – and now the debt vultures are swooping in.

By buying up debt at rock bottom prices and threatening legal action, they are delivering themselves vast profits. All whilst draining much needed resources from countries in crisis.

Recently, in both Ethiopia and Ukraine, the threat of legal action through the UK courts appears to have strong-armed these countries into deals that will deliver the vultures a windfall.

  • Debt vultures threatened to sue Ethiopia four times before finally agreeing to a deal that will still see them paid up to 17% more than Ethiopia’s other lenders – that's $100m.
  • In Ukraine, debt vultures have been paid $3.7 billion on debt with an original value of $2.6 billion. This is twice as much as other lenders received.

We have a big opportunity coming up to demand action. At the end of this year, the UK will take over the presidency of the G20 – a self-selected group dominated by rich nations - and right now the government is deciding what's on the agenda. It’s our chance to put action on the debt crisis firmly on the table.

Will you email your MP today and call on them to push for a debt justice law that would stop debt vultures and get debt cancelled?
