Event: Debt and democracy

Across the globe, from Argentina to Egypt and Pakistan, unjust debt and austerity policies imposed by powerful development banks – the International Monetary Fund and World Bank – are undermining democracy and fuelling authoritarianism.

This debt-driven authoritarianism across lower-income countries is part of a wider shift towards the repression of protest and human rights that is gaining momentum around the world.

Join us online on Thursday 23 October to hear from activists who are resisting – often in the face of increasingly hostile regimes – to demand action on the debt crisis and challenge debt-fuelled authoritarianism.

We’ll be hearing from:

  • Shereen Talaat, director and founder of the MENAFEM feminist movement for economic, development and ecological justice. Based in Morocco and with over 20 years' experience, Shereen is a leader in the global fight for climate, gender and debt justice.
  • Farooq Tariq, the General Secretary of the Pakistan Kissan Rabita Committee, a network of 31 small peasant organisations and a coalition member of the international platform La Via Campesina.
  • Jerome Phelps, head of advocacy at Debt Justice UK and co-editor of the recent Debt, Austerity and Democracy report.

This event will be held on zoom – details of how to join will be sent by email on registration.
