Ban the Bailiffs: Email your MP

Debt from council tax can build up fast. Families only need to miss one payment, and within a week they can be billed for the whole year. What starts as £190 can become a £2,280 debt at terrifying speed.

Right now, 4.4 million people are facing mounting council tax debt.

Worse still, councils first response is often to send in the bailiffs, adding hundreds of pounds in fees to the debts of struggling families. Across the UK 1.7 million referrals for bailiff visits were made last year.

Right now, the government is deciding what changes they will make. They could help people write off the £6bn of Council Tax debt that has built up over cost of living crisis and massively reduce bailiffs visits or they could do nothing.

We have to make sure they hear loud and clear that we want to see an end to this outdated practice and that councils need to support and not punish people in debt.

Will you help make sure the new Minister for housing, communities and local government; Steve Reid MP gets the message by contacting your MP?
